The Radford University Center For Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) and Springhouse Community School (SCS) came together in spring 2019 to capture an ultimate community teaching and learning moment. As part of their mathematics curriculum, SCS students — under the guidance of mentor David Reece — designed and built a full-scale sailboat. A film crew comprised of CITL interns and RU communications students, along with co-directors by John Hildreth (Associate Director, CITL) and Tom Snediker (Learning Architect, CITL), captured the process and spirit of the project by visiting the school and build sites to document the work and talk to the SCS faculty and students. The result is will be presented in a forthcoming CITL Productions film in Summer 2019.

Beyond the project itself, the boat is a symbol for what CITL and SCS — and the larger education re-imagined movement — stand for, as well as a benchmark for the creative, non-traditional pedagogies and activities the CITL seeks to practice, propagate and advocate for both on campus and in the community.
